The digital landscape shifted on 28 June 2025, as the European Accessibility Act (EAA) officially became law across all EU member states. For any business providing products or services to EU consumers, website accessibility is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’, it’s a legal mandate.
Whilst this is a genuine regulatory change, it’s also a real opportunity to improve your brand’s digital performance. The primary goal of the EAA is to ensure that the 101 million people in the EU with disabilities have equal access to the digital economy, but the technical requirements for compliance closely mirror the foundations of high-performance SEO. So, could this actually work in your favour?
Who Needs to Comply?
The EAA impacts a broad range of UK businesses. If you fall into any of the following categories, your website needs to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards:

E-commerce:
Selling products directly to EU customers.
B2C Services:
Providing services to EU consumers.
B2B Services:
Providing services to EU businesses.
Lead Generation:
Operating sites specifically targeting EU markets.
International Shipping:
Shipping goods into any EU member state.
Digital Marketing:
Advertising or marketing campaigns active in EU countries.
Exemptions: ‘Microenterprises’ (under 10 employees AND under £2m turnover) may be exempt, but most established businesses exporting to the EU will need to comply. And worth noting; even if your site was built years ago, any new content updates made after June 2025 mean the whole site needs to meet these standards.
The Strategy: Accessibility is SEO
An accessible website is a more search-engine-friendly website. Google’s algorithms increasingly reward user experience (UX), and many WCAG 2.2 requirements are identical to SEO best practices.
1. Improved Crawlability and Indexing
Accessibility requires a clear, logical heading hierarchy (H1, H2, H3) and descriptive alt-text for images. These features don’t just help screen readers, they give search engine bots a roadmap to better understand and rank your content.
2. Enhanced UX and Retention
The EAA focuses on making sites both operable and understandable. By improving navigation, readability, and mobile functionality for users with disabilities, you inadvertently lower bounce rates and increase dwell time for all users, both key signals that tell Google your site is delivering real value.
3. An Untapped Market Opportunity
With 25% of the EU population living with some form of disability, ignoring accessibility means ignoring over 100 million potential customers. From a commercial perspective, compliance removes barriers to conversion for as much as 25% of your potential European market.
The Risk of Not Taking Action
Beyond the missed SEO benefits, the legal and reputational risks are significant. Penalties for non-compliance are designed to be ‘effective and proportionate’. Fines ranging from €5,000 up to €500,000 depending on the country and violation severity. Additional consequences include daily fines (up to €1,000/day), lawsuits, mandatory website removal, and potential imprisonment in some jurisdictions. UK businesses trading with the EU aren’t shielded by distance, legal action from consumers and regulatory bodies can lead to hefty fines and lasting reputational damage.
European Accessibility Act – How Laser Red Can Help
We’d rather help you get ahead of this than patch things up later. Here’s where we’d start:
- Accessibility Audit: A comprehensive review to identify where your current site falls short of WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards.
- Compliance Roadmap: A prioritised plan to fix technical and content-based accessibility issues.
- Knowledge Implementation: Shifting your content strategy to an ‘accessibility-first’ mindset, so every new update strengthens your SEO and compliance at the same time.
